Privacy Policy

Effective date: 7 September 2026

Line Lift is a watercolor painting app made by Fredrik Påhlman. It is built to need as little of your data as possible: no account, no ads, no tracking across other apps or websites, and nothing about you is ever sold or shared for marketing.

Your artwork stays yours

Everything you paint, capture, or import — drawings, photos, references, time-lapses — is stored on your device. Your artwork files are never uploaded to us. (The anonymous session recordings described under "Anonymous usage analytics" below can show the app's screen while you paint, which may include artwork in progress — read that section for exactly what they are.)

iCloud backup. So that your work survives a lost or replaced device, Line Lift can keep your sketchbook in your own iCloud (iCloud Drive's app container). This is on by default when you are signed in to iCloud, and you can switch it off at any time from the canvas "…" menu — turning it off moves your work back to device-only storage and removes it from iCloud. Your artwork syncs directly between your devices and Apple's iCloud under Apple's privacy terms; it never passes through our servers, and we have no access to it.

Camera and photo library

The camera is used only to capture your drawings so their linework can be lifted from the paper, and photo-library access happens only through Apple's system picker and share sheet — the app can see only the single photo you pick, and saves an image only when you choose Save. Images are processed on your device.

Anonymous usage analytics

To understand which parts of the app are used and where people get stuck, Line Lift sends anonymous usage data to PostHog, our analytics provider, hosted in the European Union (PostHog EU Cloud). Two kinds:

Usage events — a fixed set of named events covering how the app is used: app opened, the steps of a sketch capture (started, completed, abandoned, and the stages in between), lift review, painting started and completed, which tool was picked, wetting the paper, onboarding steps, shares, feedback, and battery/thermal samples (so we can keep the app from draining your battery). Each event carries only counts and coarse categories — which tool, which capture source, how many seconds, how many pieces are in your gallery — plus the app version, the number of days since first install, a session counter, and the device model. Never your name, your photos, or anything that identifies you — the one exception is the feedback you choose to send, described below.

Session recordings — the app records anonymized replays of app usage: periodic screenshots of the app's own screen while you use it, which can include your artwork in progress. Text you type is masked in these recordings. They carry the same anonymous identifier as the events and nothing else; we watch them to find where the app confuses people or breaks. They are never published, never used for advertising, and never leave our analytics provider's EU servers.

The app mints one random identifier on first launch so events from the same install can be counted together; it is not linked to you, your device serial, or any other app, and deleting the app deletes it. Events queue on your device and upload in small batches; if you are offline they simply wait.

In-app feedback

If you send feedback from inside the app, the text you type is transmitted to us (via the same EU analytics pipeline), together with which part of the app you were in, and an optional small screenshot of your current screen — the screenshot only if you switch its toggle on. Sending feedback is entirely voluntary.

Your email address, if you choose to give one. The feedback sheet has an optional field for an email address, and it is there for one reason: so we can write back to you. It is never required — leave it empty and the feedback sends exactly the same — and there is no account and no verification step. If you do fill it in, the address is remembered on your device so a second report does not mean typing it again; clear the field and it is forgotten. Reports arrive in a private channel that Fredrik answers from, so an address you give travels there with your message. It is never added to a mailing list, never used for marketing, and never shared with anyone else. This is the only personal information Line Lift collects.

What we never do

We do not collect your name, your contacts, or your location. We ask for an email address in exactly one place — the optional field in the feedback sheet described above — and nowhere else in the app. We do not track you across apps or websites, show ads, sell data, or use third-party marketing SDKs.

Data retention and your rights

Anonymous analytics are retained in aggregate for product-improvement purposes. An email address given with feedback is kept only as long as it takes to answer you and keep that conversation readable. Because events are anonymous, we usually cannot connect them to a specific person; if you have sent feedback and would like it deleted, or have any question about this policy — including rights under the GDPR such as access, correction, and erasure — contact us and we will help: fredrikande@gmail.com.

Children

Line Lift is suitable for all ages and collects the same minimal, anonymous data from everyone.

Changes

If the app's data practices change, this policy will be updated and the effective date revised before the change takes effect. (14 July 2026: described iCloud backup, which is now part of the app, and listed the exact analytics events. 27 August 2026: described the expanded usage events, the battery/thermal samples, and the anonymized session recordings that are now part of the app's analytics. 7 September 2026: described the optional email address in the feedback sheet — the app's only personal data — and corrected the "What we never do" section, which until now said we collected no email addresses.)
